3 Tips for Styling Winter Outfits

Updated: Mar 23

Seasons Greetings!

Here at Whisperings of Anna, we hope you’re wrapping up warm and indulging yourself accordingly, wherever you are in the world during this very festive time of year. Keeping cosy during the colder months can always be a challenge, but that shouldn’t mean you have to negate your own personal style to do so!

Here are our top tips for styling warm clothes for winter:

  1. Layers, layers and even more layers: Especially if no one will see how many layers you’ve got on, definitely make use of them to your full advantage. We're talking turtlenecks under dresses under cardigans under coats. Fleece-lined tights are your new best friend. We’ve all got the cutest dress or skirt to wear but don’t want to be completely impractical in the cold, and while thick tights are cosy, they can completely infantilise an outfit. Our solution? Thermal skin-colour tights! These can be cheaply bought online for varying degrees of chilliness and worn under sheer, black tights or with thigh-high boots for a sophisticated look.

  2. Know your coats: The Old Hollywood icons we hold near and dear have been spotted in everything from glamorous full-furs to fur-trimmed pieces (see Audrey Hepburn in Love in the Afternoon, 1957), to the leading lady’s swing coat (aka the princess coat, see Eva Marie Saint in On The Waterfront, 1954), found easily by vintage reproduction shops, to the classic trench worn by the femme fatale all-year-round in both milder and more extreme kinds of weather (see Sophia Loren in The Key, 1958). So, find your winter staple that goes with everything from jeans to dresses, and that looks timeless and classy now, and will forever. While we’re on the subject of cute dresses, you shouldn’t have to hide yours under some coat that no one will see! You could also kill two birds with one stone via capes and coat-dresses, which will act as a 2-in-1 and provide you with the ultimate twirl-age whilst keeping you warm.

  3. Invest in proper footwear and accessories: No outfit this season is complete without a matching gloves, scarf and hat set (we vote for pink always, but creams and whites are effortlessly dainty and anything sparkly is a bonus), and a good pair of winter boots. It’s critical to prevent losing body heat during the cooler months, and protect your vulnerable skin from drying out and becoming chapped by using hand and body creams accordingly. Winter-appropriate wear is designed with frost and ice in mind, preventing slips and falls on slippy terrain.

Find your winter staple that goes with everything... that looks timeless and classy now, and will forever
